The SECOND laid-back, cozy mystery in the Jake Samson and Rosie Vicente detective series.
“... surprising twists, and sharp-edged humor...” -Publishers Weekly
A Nice Jewish Boy, His Lesbian BFF, and MURDER MOST MARIN...
Unafraid, unlicensed, and, in this case, unpaid, unofficial Bay Area P.I. Jake Samson and his carpenter sidekick Rosie set out to clear a friend of a murder charge. The victim is found stabbed to death in a damp redwood canyon in woodsy, wealthy Marin County, outside San Francisco. It's up to Jake and Rosie to find the real killer, and they've got a number of suspects the victim's fellow executives at a questionable correspondence school, his divided and bitter family, and his quirky Marin County neighbors--a truly odd assortment of California woods dwellers.
But the real treats here are Singer's dry humor and her characters Jake, a nice Jewish boy with a rebellious--and very witty--streak; and Rosie, an irresistible twist on the sassy gay friend. Readers will love their easy, breezy relationship, and wish they had a friend like either one of them.
"...one of the nicer guys in the private eye business, who operates in a relaxed, casual style without need for macho posturing.” -Washington Post
“Jake remains his loyal, intelligent and quirky self, which is plenty to rejoice about.” -Contra Costa Times
“Ms. Singer is one of only three or four authors that I wouldn't miss whatever she wrote. “ -Over My Dead Body

This is a cool and clever mystery, filled with believable red herrings, a fascinating look at a mail order school, and a dandy setting in Marin County that is so well written you'll feel like you've been there. Right after that I should mention the great and diverse cast of characters. Well, diverse is PC in Marin and the author does a good job of setting this up. There is humor as well as crime. This is a true whodunnit with the dead body found in the first chapter, but unlike so many books written from this angle, this one doesn't disintegrate into dull conversations of who did what where. Instead, the PI goes sleuthing all over the area and turns up new and strange mysteries. I enjoyed the pace and will not drop a single clue about the solution.Product details

I was looking forward to the second book in this series after enjoying the first. I had hoped that the characters would be more fully developed, and that the relationships would continue to grow, as happens in the best series. Unfortunately, for me, this book was disappointing. It read like a slightly less interesting rerun. I hope the next book, if there is one, has a bit more oomph.
Innocuous novel. It did not offend, nor did it excite me. It simply passed the time. Samson is an acceptable character, but there was really nothing about him that caught my attention or stood out in any way. Many of the supporting characters were caricatures. Kudos for the frank depiction of gay characters for a book written in the eighties. Awesome if you want to add to your collection of San Francisco mysteries but not much more to recommend beyond that.
This one was not as good as the first one, and many times during reading this one I kept thinking I had already read this book, I guess because of the many things the same in the first one and this 2nd one.
I found this had Too much info. to my liking. It drug the story down and made it boring in many places. Info that had nothing to do with the crime/mystery. I found I put this down many times easily. It just did not hold my interest. But I did finish it....
Sorry, I won't be recommending it and I think this is the last in this series for me...
Happy reading Ya'll.........
I took a long time to read this book. The writing was good, the characters wells developed, and the setting perfect.
But it's tedious. He describes everything in minute detail, what everyone was wearing, etc.
The plot struggles along in the first half, and I read the second half in one sitting. It picked up steam.
But he spent so much time pondering the possible suspects that when you discover the killer, you say, "Who? Was he/she even in this book?
Mr. Detective is investigating a crime in Marin Co. California. I'd give anything to live there, but he chooses to live in Oakland, because it's has character! Have you been to Oakland? It's a dump.
He is very polite, to a fault, and so nice. Little by little, he finds the killer.
I'd have to go back and reread the book to see what the killer's role was, but no, I think not.
Jake is a PI, but not officially. He's real and down to earth and sounds really nice. He's single. He feels old. He owns two cats. He's not gay, but his best friend is. He drives an old car. He likes to help friends get out of trouble. He's curious, not afraid to ask questions, feels a little guilty about sleeping with each of his dates/girlfriends (I told you he wasn't gay!), and likes beer. He calls his dad regularly. And he's Jewish. He's an honest to goodness nice guy. You'll like him. You'll like his friends. You'll like the way he struggles with the details, unraveling the murderer of a man named James Smith (no, really!) along a trail that is more tortuous than the one that crawls up the wall of the canyon into his friend, Artie's, neighborhood. There are a few red herrings; big, fat ones, as Jake describes them. And the real murderer is someone you don't see until the last, interesting reveal. You will like this book. Enjoy!
What I really enjoyed about this #2 book in The Jake Samson series is the interplay of the family members of the victim. The dynamics are riveting - the young seductress, the uptight mother, the outcast son. I was as interested in the family dynamics as I was the plot, which by the was paced just right. Also, her descriptions anchored you in time and place. I especially loved the scene at the Pelican restaurant. I'll be buying more from this author. I just wish more from this author were in ebook format!!!
Isn't that what you want from a mystery? I loved that it was set in the Bay Area, where I live, and Shelley's attention to detail is meticulous. I could see all the places she was describing. The story has no shortage of eccentric characters, and it moves along at a fast pace. Jake, posing as a journalist, sets out to help his friends when their son is accused of murder. Along with his sidekick, Rosie, he takes us on a merry chase, of course fingering the actual villain in the end. I highly recommend Free Draw, and look forward to reading more of Shelley's mysteries.
